Piedfort issues from Monaco in this period were struck expressly for collectors, produced at roughly double the standard planchet thickness on polished dies. This piece was released the year after Grace Kelly's death in September 1982 — she died following a stroke-induced car accident on the Moyenne Corniche — making it among the earliest numismatic responses to her passing from the principality itself.
