Additional information

Monaco's postwar coinage was reorganized under Rainier III following his accession in 1949, with these copper-aluminium pieces among the first issues of his reign. The alloy choice reflected the same metal shortages and economic constraints affecting much of Western Europe in the immediate postwar period — fine metals were simply not available for minor circulating denominations.
