Obverse description Central field features the coat of arms of Rwanda, depicting a shield bearing the national motto flanked by crossed flags and surmounted by a dove, with the denomination 10 FR inscribed above the shield. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE RWANDAISE arcs across the upper field, while INDEPENDANCE · 1961 · 1965 runs along the lower periphery. The fineness mark ARGOR 900/1000 appears in the lower field to either side of the shield. The design commemorates Rwandan independence, with the dates 1961 and 1965 referencing the proclamation of the republic and the coin's issue year respectively.

Additional information

Rwanda's first gold coinage was issued the year the country held its inaugural presidential election under the 1962 constitution — a consolidation of Kayibanda's Parmehutu-led government following independence from Belgian trusteeship. The pieces were struck in limited quantities, almost certainly intended for diplomatic presentation and collector sale rather than any practical monetary function; the newly independent state had neither the gold reserves nor the infrastructure to support circulating gold coinage.

Kayibanda was overthrown in a military coup by Juvénal Habyarimana in July 1973, making the entire 1965 gold series a numismatic footnote to a government that lasted just over a decade.
