The Democratic Republic of Congo has a long history of issuing collector silver under themes with no domestic connection whatsoever — this piece being a clear example. John Paul II, who died in April 2005, was still alive when this was struck, making "Prophet of Peace" a title applied to a sitting pope by a central bank with essentially no Catholic institutional relationship to the Vatican.
KM#145 is part of a broader Congolese series of foreign-themed commemoratives produced primarily for the European collector market in the early 2000s.
