| Obverse description | A full-bodied lion stands in profile facing left, depicted in finely detailed relief upon a grassy ground, conveying strength and heraldic dignity. The legend REPUBLIQUE DEMOCRATIQUE DU CONGO arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 10 FRANCS is inscribed in the lower field. The mirror-like proof field provides a sharp contrast to the frosted devices, enhancing the sculptural quality of the design. |

Issued as part of a wave of commemorative silver pieces struck by the Congo under licensing arrangements common to small-nation coin programs of the late 1990s, this piece has no meaningful connection to the Democratic Republic of the Congo itself. Pierre de Coubertin, the French educator who revived the Olympic Games in 1896, spent his career based primarily in Paris and Lausanne — the latter city hosting his grave at the Bois-de-Vaux cemetery, with his heart separately interred in Olympia, Greece, per his own request.
