Additional information

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued a voluminous stream of novelty silver pieces since the late 1990s, almost none intended for domestic circulation. These coins are produced entirely for the international collector market, typically contracted through European minting houses and distributed through dealers rather than any national banking channel. The DRC's fractured monetary infrastructure made it an attractive issuing authority for this kind of arrangement — the sovereign name carries legal validity while the state itself has minimal involvement in production or distribution.

KM#142 is one of several fauna-themed issues from this period. No known circulation figures exist for the domestic economy.
