Reverse description The reverse displays the denomination 10 FRANCS in bold raised numerals and lettering within a square cartouche set on its corner as a lozenge, itself inscribed within a circle of fine geometric arabesque ornament. The word ESSAI appears in small letters beneath the denomination, confirming the trial or pattern status of the piece. The Latin legend MAROC arcs prominently along the upper border, while the Arabic inscription المغرب (Al-Maghrib) runs along the lower border in decorative Thuluth script. Stylized foliate and geometric motifs fill the surrounding field, creating an overall design of exceptional intricacy characteristic of the Monnaie de Paris's orientalist engraving tradition.

Additional information

Essai pieces from the Monnaie de Paris were produced in limited quantities as official trial strikes submitted for administrative approval before — or sometimes instead of — full production runs. This 1929 Mohammed V essai predates his formal enthronement; he was still ruling as Sultan under the French Protectorate, and French monetary authorities retained full control over coinage design and authorization. The "Essai" incuse on the coin is not a collector affectation — it was a legal distinction separating trial pieces from currency.

The .680 silver standard was specific to Moroccan Protectorate issues, deliberately set below metropolitan French coinage alloys.
