Essai pieces for the 1952 Moroccan coinage were struck in Paris as the protectorate entered its most turbulent phase. Just a year later, in August 1953, the French colonial administration forcibly exiled Sultan Mohammed V to Madagascar — an act that galvanized the independence movement and made him a national martyr figure before he ever returned to the throne. Coins bearing his name from this precise moment carry the weight of that proximity.
Essais of this type were produced in very small quantities for official approval purposes and were never released for circulation.
