The A6M Zero — designed by Jiro Horikoshi and first flown in 1939 — dominated the Pacific theater through 1942 before Allied tactical adaptation and the introduction of the F6F Hellcat rendered it increasingly obsolete. The Congo has issued commemorative silver in this vein since the late 1990s, producing aviation-themed pieces with no connection to the issuing nation's history.
