The Democratic Republic of Congo issued a series of glass coins in the mid-2000s as collector novelties, contracting specialty manufacturers to produce them as legal tender curiosities rather than anything intended for circulation. The Macropus rufus — the red kangaroo — has no particular connection to Central Africa, which speaks plainly to the nature of this issue: a foreign wildlife theme selected purely for its appeal to thematic collectors in export markets.
