Reverse description A faithful reproduction of the medieval Franc à Cheval gold coin of King Jean II Le Bon (John II of France, r. 1350–1364), depicting the king in full armour astride a caparisoned horse in full gallop to the left, brandishing a sword in his right hand and bearing a shield decorated with fleurs-de-lis on his left arm. The field is strewn with fleurs-de-lis, and the king wears a crown surmounted by a fleur-de-lis. The circular Gothic legend reads 'IOHANNES DEI GRACIA FRANCORV REX', enclosed within a beaded inner circle, replicating the epigraphy of the original 14th-century gold franc.
