The Sistine Madonna was painted by Raphael around 1512 for the church of San Sisto in Piacenza, reportedly commissioned by Pope Julius II. It hung there for over two centuries before Augustus III of Saxony acquired it in 1754 for the Dresden gallery — a purchase that required special papal dispensation. The two cherubs at the bottom of the painting became, entirely separately from the rest of the work, one of the most reproduced images in 20th-century commercial art.
Congo's "Famous Paintings" series are collector pieces with no meaningful circulation history, struck in silver-plated copper for the souvenir and novelty market rather than as functional currency.
