The Democratic Republic of Congo has issued numerous collector pieces under the "Famous Paintings" series, licensing well-known works to drive numismatic sales rather than serve any domestic monetary function. Jean-François Millet's 1857 canvas was itself controversial on release — French critics read its monumental treatment of peasant laborers as a political provocation, and the painting was rejected from a prominent position at the Salon before eventually entering the Musée d'Orsay.
Silver-plated copper rather than solid silver keeps production costs low. These issues were never intended for circulation in the DRC.
