The Democratic Republic of Congo has issued an extensive series of wildlife-themed silver coins since the late 1990s, many produced by European minting houses for the collector market rather than any domestic circulation purpose. The "Emperor fish" designation most likely refers to a cichlid species from the Congo River basin, one of the most biologically diverse freshwater systems on earth — the river itself has been geographically isolated long enough to produce hundreds of endemic species found nowhere else.
