The "Celtic Warrior" series issued under the Democratic Republic of Congo's name is a frankly opportunistic product of the modern coin marketing trade — the DRC has no historical connection to Celtic peoples whatsoever. These pieces are struck by private minting houses operating under licensing arrangements with governments that offer their sovereign authority in exchange for a share of collector revenues, a practice the numismatic community calls "fantasy" or "client state" coinage. The DRC has been among the most prolific issuers in this category since the late 1990s.
