The Democratic Republic of Congo has issued commemorative silver coinage under the Banque Centrale du Congo since the early 2000s, largely targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation — a fiscal strategy common among smaller economies seeking hard currency from foreign numismatic buyers. These pieces were never intended to pass through Congolese hands.
KM#179a is the silver variant of this issue; a base metal version also exists under the same series.
