| Additional information |
Rwanda's first national coinage was issued in 1964, just two years after independence from Belgian trusteeship — a period when the new government was simultaneously building state institutions from scratch and managing the aftermath of the 1959–1962 Hutu Revolution. The Banque Nationale du Rwanda itself had only been established in 1964, making this coin nearly contemporaneous with the founding of the institution named on it.
The series was struck at the Monnaie de Paris.
