Aruba's Status Aparte — its separate autonomous status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands — was granted on January 1, 1986, following years of political pressure led largely by Gilberto François "Betico" Croes, who died in a car accident the very next day. This coin marks the twentieth anniversary of that separation. Aruba had originally pushed for full independence by 1996, a target that was formally dropped in 1994 after the island's government reconsidered the economic consequences of severing ties with the Netherlands entirely.
