Aruba separated from the Netherlands Antilles as a separate autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1986, and the Aruban florin was introduced that same year to replace the Netherlands Antillean guilder at par. The Centrale Bank van Aruba has consistently contracted Enschedé in Haarlem for its entire florin series — a logical choice given the printer's centuries-long relationship with Dutch Caribbean territories.
Designer Evelino Fingal was a local Aruban artist, which gave the series an unusual degree of indigenous creative input for a small-island currency of this period. The watermark remains the primary security feature on P#16 — a notably spare specification for a note issued well into the era of multi-layered security printing.
