Additional information

Issued to mark Willem-Alexander's fiftieth birthday on April 27, 2017, this coin was struck by the Royal Dutch Mint at Utrecht — an institution with continuous operation dating to 1567. The coloured variant with gold lettering was produced alongside a standard version, a bifurcated release strategy the mint has used increasingly since the early 2000s to drive collector differentiation without altering the core design or precious metal content.

Willem-Alexander acceded to the Dutch throne in April 2013 following his mother Beatrix's abdication — the third consecutive abdication in the House of Orange-Nassau, after Juliana in 1980 and Beatrix herself.
