| Additional information |
The "Widnet il-Bahar" — Maltese for the sea fan coral Eunicella verrucosa — takes its name from a marine protected species found in Maltese coastal waters, where decades of trawling damage and warming Mediterranean temperatures have made recovery efforts a policy priority. Malta's central bank has issued themed conservation pieces before, but the coin-bar format here is relatively recent for the institution.
