Uno Cygnaeus, a Lutheran pastor who spent years as a missionary in Alaska before returning to Finland, became the architect of the Finnish folk school system in the 1860s — an achievement that separated Finland's educational model from the Swedish-influenced grammar school tradition that preceded it. His insistence on practical, manual instruction alongside academic learning was controversial enough that it required a direct imperial decree from Alexander II to take root.
