Additional information

The University of Malta, founded in 1592 by the Jesuits, is among the oldest universities in the Commonwealth and the sole university in Malta. This coin was issued to mark the institution's history, though it falls within a broader Central Bank of Malta commemorative silver program that has grown considerably since the country joined the eurozone in 2008 — a monetary transition that stripped Malta of independent currency issuance for everyday circulation and pushed commemorative coinage into the role of the only distinctly Maltese numismatic output.
