Italy's 2006 UNICEF commemorative marks the 60th anniversary of the organization's founding in December 1946 — itself a direct response to the catastrophic displacement of children across post-war Europe and Asia. UNICEF was created as a temporary emergency fund; the "T" in the acronym stood for "Temporary." It was made permanent by the UN General Assembly in 1953.
