| Obverse description | The obverse features the stylized official logo of the Tour de France race rendered in large, flowing script occupying the central field: 'le Tour de France'. The horizon line of a road or landscape curves across the lower portion of the field, evoking the open road of the race. The French Republican motto LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ arcs along the upper rim as a legend. The date 2003, the denomination 10, and the country initials RF together with the word EURO appear in the lower field. |

Issued to mark the centenary of the Tour de France, which ran its inaugural edition in 1903 at the instigation of journalist Géo Lefèvre and L'Auto editor Henri Desgrange largely as a publicity stunt to boost the struggling newspaper's circulation. The race very nearly wasn't held at all — early registration was so poor that Desgrange extended the entry deadline and slashed the participation fee to fill the field.
