Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Suez Canal's opening in 1869, this coin arrives at an awkward historical moment for Malta — the island's entire strategic importance to Britain, and later to NATO, was predicated on the canal's existence. Before 1869, Malta's Grand Harbour was a critical waypoint for the long Cape route; the canal made it indispensable as a coaling and resupply station for ships transiting between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The canal didn't diminish Malta's role — it amplified it for decades.
