| Obverse description | Central field features the heraldic arms of the Apostolic Chamber (Sede Vacante), comprising a shield charged with the Papal keys in saltire surmounted by the umbraculum (ombrellino), flanked on either side by tasselled cardinal's hat cords. The shield displays the Chi-Rho christogram and a tower motif in its quarters. A scroll beneath the shield bears the Latin motto in four parts. The circumferential legend SEDE VACANTE MMXIII reads along the left and right rims, with the full motto FIDEM CUSTODIRE CONCORDIAM SERVARE inscribed on the scroll in the lower field. |

Sede Vacante issues are struck during the interregnum between pontificates, authorized not by a reigning pope but by the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church — in 2013, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. Benedict XVI's abdication on February 28 of that year was the first papal resignation since Gregory XII in 1415, making this particular Sede Vacante the only one produced in modern times under those circumstances rather than following a death. The Vatican mint's window for striking was brief: Francis was elected on March 13, ending the vacancy after just thirteen days.
