Malta's connection to Renaissance art is largely institutional — the Knights of St. John, who ruled the island from 1530, were aggressive patrons who brought Caravaggio himself to Valletta in 1607. He completed at least two major works there before fleeing after a violent altercation, making Malta an unlikely but genuine node in late-Renaissance painting history.
