Reverse description Detailed bust of Prince Albert I of Monaco (1848–1922) facing slightly left, portrayed in ceremonial dress heavily adorned with elaborate decorations, orders, and insignia including a prominent star-shaped medal on his chest. The prince is depicted with a full beard and mustache in a dignified, realistic style with finely modeled relief. A textured diagonal-stripe background fills the field behind the effigy. The inscription ALBERT 1er appears to the left of the portrait, with the dates 1848 and 1922 flanking the right side of the field, commemorating the centenary of his death.

Additional information

Albert I ruled Monaco from 1889 until his death in 1922, and spent much of that reign conducting pioneering oceanographic expeditions in the Atlantic and Mediterranean — work that led directly to the founding of the Institut Océanographique in Paris in 1906 and the Musée Océanographique de Monaco in 1910. He was regarded by contemporaries as one of the most serious scientific minds among European heads of state, publishing extensively on deep-sea fauna. The 2022 issue marks the centenary of his death.
