Additional information

Pindar of Thebes, the 5th-century BC lyric poet, is best remembered for his epinician odes — victory hymns commissioned by wealthy patrons to commemorate wins at the Panhellenic games. The odes were expensive productions, sometimes performed by trained choruses, and Pindar's fees were reportedly substantial even by ancient standards. His work survived antiquity in unusually complete form: four books of odes, covering all four major games cycles, were preserved through the Byzantine manuscript tradition when most other lyric poets were lost entirely.

This issue is part of Greece's ongoing commemorative series honoring figures of ancient intellectual and cultural heritage.
