Picasso's 1901 oil painting known in French as La Miséreuse accroupie — and in Spanish as La Espera or Margot — belongs to his early Blue Period, painted in Paris shortly after the suicide of his close friend Carlos Casagemas. The FNMT has issued a sustained series drawing from Spanish museum collections, and this piece pulls from the Art Institute of Chicago's holdings, an unusual choice that gestures toward Picasso's transnational footprint rather than the more obvious Reina Sofía or Museu Picasso selections.
