Paul-Émile Victor led French polar expeditions for decades, founding the Expéditions Polaires Françaises in 1947 and overseeing operations in both Greenland and Antarctica through the Cold War period. This coin was issued the year of the centenary of his birth. Victor died in 1995 in French Polynesia, having spent his final years advocating against the nuclear tests France was conducting in the Pacific — a complicated epilogue for a man whose career depended entirely on state funding.
