| Obverse description | At the centre of the obverse, the official emblem of the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics is depicted — a kotinos, or olive wreath, rendered in stylised form and encircling the Olympic rings. The wreath is a direct reference to the ancient Games, in which the kotinos served as the supreme award presented to victorious athletes. The entire central motif is enclosed within a circular border surrounded by twelve stars, evoking the flag of the European Union. The circular legend in Greek script appears along the upper and lower periphery of the field. |
