Reverse description A torch relay runner is depicted in dynamic stride, bearing the Olympic flame, set against a classical column to one side and a cartographic outline of the continent of Australia in the background field, referencing the relay's passage through that country. The Olympic rings appear in the upper portion of the coin, while the denomination 10 EURO is inscribed along the lower periphery in Latin script. The overall composition commemorates the international journey of the Olympic flame en route to Athens for the 2004 Summer Games.

Additional information

Greece issued this coin to mark Athens' return of the Olympic Games in 2004 — the first time the Games had been held in their city of origin since 1896. The torch relay that year was notably the first to travel the Olympic flame to every continent before arriving in Athens, a logistical undertaking involving over 11,000 torchbearers across 78 days. Australia was one of the relay's most significant international stops, given Sydney had hosted the previous Games in 2000.
