| Additional information |
Issued as part of the Monnaie de Paris "Plane of Legend" series, this coin commemorates the P-51 Mustang — a fighter whose existence owed almost everything to a British order placed in 1940. North American Aviation designed and built the prototype in 117 days. The RAF flew it first; the USAAF adopted it later, fitting it with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that transformed its high-altitude performance and made it the definitive long-range escort fighter over occupied Europe.
France's particular interest in the type is not incidental — Free French pilots flew Mustangs with the 1st Fighter Group.
