Louis IX is the only French king to have been canonized, elevated to sainthood by Pope Boniface VIII in 1297 — nearly three decades after his death on crusade at Tunis in 1270. This coin is part of Monnaie de Paris's long-running "Rois de France" series, which works through the monarchy chronologically and has drawn sustained collector interest precisely because it forces engagement with rulers well outside the familiar canon.
Louis died of dysentery at Tunis before the Eighth Crusade achieved anything of consequence.
