Additional information

Issued to mark the bicentenary of Byron's death at Missolonghi in April 1824, where he died of fever while organizing Greek forces during the War of Independence. He never saw combat. The Greeks accorded him a national hero's funeral, and his heart was buried in the town — the rest of his remains were returned to England, where the Abbey initially refused him interment in Poets' Corner. That snub stood for over a century.
