Croatia's lace-making traditions — particularly those from Lepoglava, Hvar, and Pag — were inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009, one of the earliest Croatian entries. The Pag lace in particular is notable for being made without any supporting tool, worked directly with fingers and a needle on a hard pillow, a technique traceable to at least the 15th century. This coin was issued the year after Croatia joined the Eurozone, making it one of the first commemorative gold pieces struck under the Croatian National Bank's post-euro adoption program.
