The 2008 Zaragoza Expo ran under the theme "Water and Sustainable Development," and the Bridge Pavilion — designed by Zaha Hadid — was its most architecturally ambitious structure, spanning the Ebro River as both a functional crossing and an exhibition space. Spain issued this coin in 2007 as part of a broader commemorative program ahead of the event, one of several European nations to mint official expo coinage during the same window.
Hadid's pavilion was one of her first major built works in Spain, completed the same year her firm was deepening its footprint across the country.
