Additional information

Issued to mark the 2004 EU enlargement — the largest single expansion in the Union's history, bringing in ten new member states simultaneously on May 1st of that year. Spain had its own accession memory to draw on; Madrid joined in 1986 after nearly a decade of negotiations following Franco's death, which gave this particular commemorative more political resonance than most.

The Real Casa de la Moneda traces its origins to 1615, making it one of the older continuously operating mint facilities in Europe.
