Spain's participation in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics was itself something of a footnote — the country sent a small delegation with little expectation of hardware, and none came. The coin was issued as part of a broader Spanish commemorative program that year, which also marked the introduction of euro coinage into circulation, making 2002 an unusually busy year for the Real Casa de la Moneda on multiple production fronts.
