| Obverse description | Central to the obverse is the official emblem of the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics, featuring a kotinos — a wreath fashioned from an olive branch — encircling the five Olympic rings, rendered in high relief against a polished field. The design references the ancient Greek tradition in which the kotinos served as the sole award presented to victorious Olympic champions. The central motif is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, itself surrounded by a ring of twelve stars representing the European Union. The Greek legend and denomination appear along the upper and lower periphery respectively. |
