Obverse description The obverse depicts the Church of Santa Maria de Idris, hewn into the upper portion of the rocky spur of Montirone in the environs of San Pietro Caveoso, rendered in detailed relief. The national legend REPUBBLICA ITALIANA arcs around the design field, while the engraver's name CASSOL appears incuse at the lower right. The composition conveys the distinctive rupestrian architectural character of the Sassi di Matera with fine engraving detail.

Additional information

Matera was named a European Capital of Culture for 2019 — the designation that directly prompted this issue — making it only the third southern Italian city to receive that honor. The Sassi di Matera, the ancient cave-dwelling districts carved into the ravines below the modern city, were forcibly evacuated by the Italian government in the 1950s under a resettlement program that relocated roughly 15,000 residents, many of whom considered the displacement a humiliation rather than progress. UNESCO World Heritage status followed in 1993, rehabilitating what had once been officially described as a national disgrace.
