Kapodistrias served as the first Governor of independent Greece from 1827 until his assassination in Nafplio in October 1831 — shot outside the church of Saint Spyridon by members of the Mavromichalis clan, a killing that plunged the young state into civil war. Before Greek independence, he had built one of the most distinguished diplomatic careers in Europe, serving as Foreign Minister of Russia under Tsar Alexander I and co-signing the Congress of Vienna protocols.
