This piece belongs to the long-running Ibero-American series, a joint commemorative program launched in 1991 involving mints from Spain, Portugal, and Latin American nations issuing thematically coordinated coins simultaneously. The Navigation theme for 2003 was a natural fit for Portugal, whose 15th- and 16th-century maritime expansion fundamentally reshaped global trade routes and cartography. At .500 fineness, the alloy is noticeably lower than the .925 sterling used by many comparable commemorative programs — a cost-driven decision by INCM that affects the coin's luster relative to other issues in the series.
