The Ibero-American series, launched in 1991 through a cooperative agreement between the mints of Spain, Portugal, and their former colonial counterparts across Latin America, rotates a shared theme annually with each participating country issuing its own interpretation. The 2003 nautical theme was a natural fit for Portugal — the country that pioneered deepwater Atlantic navigation in the 15th century and whose cartographic techniques, developed at Sagres under royal patronage, were closely guarded state secrets for decades.
KM#748a designates the silver issue within a dual-metal release that year, the gold companion struck at significantly lower mintage.
