Obverse description The obverse presents an ornate composition of symbolic attributes associated with Saint Michael the Archangel. At center, a sword with a corrugated (flame-shaped) blade is displayed prominently, flanked by crosses and a scale — traditional iconographic symbols of divine justice and protection. The letter 'M', a monogram referencing Saint Michael, appears in the background field, enclosed within an elaborate leaf ornament frame. The circular legend around the periphery reads REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH with the denomination 10 EURO and the date 2017, all separated by raised dots in a stylized typographic treatment.

Reverse description The reverse depicts a detail adapted from the medieval altar painting of Saint Michael vanquishing the dragon, attributed to the anonymous Catalan master known as Mestre de Soriguerola, originally created for the church of Sant Miquel de Soriguerola in Catalonia, Spain, and dating to the late 13th century. The composition faithfully renders the hieratic, Byzantine-influenced Romanesque style of the original, showing the archangel in dynamic confrontation with the serpentine dragon below. The flat, stylized rendering of forms and the use of bold contour lines reflect the conventions of medieval Iberian ecclesiastical painting. The original work is today preserved in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. The reverse field is otherwise free of lettering, allowing the imagery to dominate the design.
