Issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Madama Butterfly at La Scala in February 1904 — a notorious opening night that collapsed into one of the worst theatrical disasters in opera history, with the audience booing, laughing, and imitating the stage sounds. Puccini withdrew the opera immediately, revised it substantially, and the Brescia revival three months later was a triumph.
The Italian state mint produced this coin under its commemorative program for cultural figures, a series that has occasionally drawn criticism for inconsistent mintage controls across issues.
