Obverse description A complex allegorical composition celebrating the artistic and architectural heritage of Genoa. In the right foreground, a detail from Giovanni Pisano's celebrated funerary sculpture 'Burial Monument of Margaret of Luxembourg', now housed in the Museo di Sant'Agostino, rendered in high relief. To the left, a column from the Romanesque cloister of Sant'Andrea frames a broken violin, an allusion to Genoa as the birthplace of the virtuoso Niccolò Paganini, while a billowing sail to the right evokes the maritime power of the ancient Republic of Genoa. In the background, fortification elements of the Parco delle Mura extend across the field. The legend REPUBBLICA ITALIANA appears with the engraver's surname COLANERI inscribed below the central design.
