This coin was issued as part of Spain's "Architecture" commemorative series launched in 2002, the same year the country completed its transition to euro coinage for circulation. Casa Milà — completed by Gaudí in 1912 and better known as La Pedrera — was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 alongside five other Gaudí works in Barcelona. The building was originally so controversial that the Barcelona city council fined Gaudí for violating construction ordinances, and the stone façade's organic forms prompted early critics to call it a quarry.
